DESCRIPTION:Camerawork Darkrooms Derry was established in 1982 in Derry’s Bogside to provide local people with the tools to create their own black and white images. Derry in the 1980s resembled a war zone\, and it was against this backdrop that Camerawork photographers began recording everyday life in the city from its citizens’ viewpoint. A huge archive was amassed\, numbering several thousand negatives\, that provide a fascinating portrayal of a people and place. Picture This allows local people to cast their minds back to a time when everything appeared black and white.

DESCRIPTION:Eoghan (Gino) Mac Cormaic will present recent research into the position taken by Conradh na Gaeilge on prison issues from the 1970s to the 1990s. ‘Ní leor rún a rith’ (words are not enough) was the advice given by senior Conradh member Íte Ní Chionnaith who wanted to see real action on these pressing issues. The political questions raised in the recent past remain with us as Conradh deals with issues such as the ongoing slaughter in Gaza. A gathering of people at the new Saint Colmcille mural at Colmcille Court to join in singing one of the world’s great songs “Amazing Grace”\, which has it’s origins in Lough Swilly and also “Back Home to Donegal.” Music afterwards at Abbey Bed and Breakfast and Grindhouse Coffee yard with Derry’s finest musicians in attendance.

DESCRIPTION:‘A Fidai Film’ – In the summer of 1982\, the Israeli army invaded Beirut. During this time\, it raided the Palestinian Research Center and looted its entire archive. The archive contained historical documents of Palestine\, including a collection of still and moving images. Taking this as a premise\, ‘A Fidai Film’ aims to create a counter-narrative to this loss\, presenting a form of cinematic sabotage that seeks to reclaim and restore the looted memories of Palestinian history. It’s a poignant exploration of identity\, memory\, and resistance\, told through a unique blend of documentary and experimental filmmaking techniques. \n‘Dancing Palestine’ – To dance is to remember\, to dance is to remind. As the Palestinian identity continues to be threatened with erasure\, Palestinians turn to their folk dance\, the dabke\, as an homage to their history and culture\, and to assert their existence. ‘Dancing Palestine’ is a documentation of this embodiment of collective memory\, as those who piece together a dabke choreography\, piece together their identities\, too. Together with the film – a performance in itself – the dabke is a testament to Palestinians’ deep love of life\, and thus their need to contribute to the archive of Palestine\, so that it continues to live on in the present.
